Purpose

The aim of the current study is to evaluate the refractive and visual outcomes of eyes implanted with an extended monofocal non-diffractive hydrophobic intraocular lens (IOL) following cataract surgery.

Setting

Oftalvist, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain

Methods

This prospective consecutive single-center study was conducted in accordance with the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki. The study was carried out in the Oftalvist Jerez the la Frontera center, Jerez de la Frontera (Spain). Our study considered the following inclusion criteria: patients with age-related cataracts, age ≥50 years and regular corneal astigmatism. Exclusion criteria considered irregular corneal astigmatism, previous intraocular or corneal refractive surgery, and any ocular alteration or pathology that could reduce visual function such as age-related macular degeneration.

Results

These are the preliminary results of a large study, and all eyes were implanted with the extended monofocal IOL Evolux (SIFI, Catania, Italy). This lens is based on a hydrophobic material and a non-diffractive profile. This lens is designed to provide better intermediate vision and equivalent distance vision when compared to a standard monofocal IOL. This lens extended the depth of focus through wavefront engineering.  Subjective refraction, monocular uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity were measured at the last postoperative visit.

Conclusions

These preliminary outcomes show good refractive accuracy and visual outcomes for the extended monofocal IOL Evolux after cataract surgery
