Purpose
To report real-world clinical outcomes of consecutive patients bilaterally implanted with Rayner RayOne EMV RAO200E. This IOL is a non-diffractive IOL using positive spherical aberrations to extend the depth of focus (EDoF).
Setting
Citadelle Hospital, ophthalmology department, Liège, Belgium
Methods
This prospective, non-randomized and open-label study was conducted at the Citadelle Hospital in Liège, Belgium. 32 eyes from 16 patients (11 women and 5 men, mean age: 70.6 years) were bilaterally implanted with the Rayner RayOne EMV IOL. After 3 months of follow-up, patients underwent refractive and visual acuity testing of photopic uncorrected (U), best-corrected (BC) or distance-corrected (DC) visual acuities (VAs) at distance (D, 6 m), at intermediate (I, 66 cm) and at near (N, 40 cm). Moreover, monocular defocus curve was measured.
Results
At baseline, mean subjective (SD) spherical, cylindrical, and spherical equivalent refractions were -0.16 (0.50), -0.56 (0.4) and -0.43 (0.47) D, respectively. The mean refractive difference between right and left eyes was 0.43 (0.36) D. Binocular mean logMAR (SD) UDVA was -0.08 (0.08); UIVA 0.16 (0.11); UNVA 0.37 (0.15); BCDVA -0.15 (0.04); DCIVA 0.29 (0.10); DCNVA 0.44 (0.10). All binocular visual acuity outcomes were significantly better than the corresponding monocular results (p<0.05). Between +1 to -1.2 D defocus, VA was found to be 0.2 logMAR or better and at -2 D defocus the mean VA was 0.43 logMAR, then slowly decreased to 0.77 (0.15) at -3 D defocus.
Conclusions
Results of this study suggest that the implantation of the new Rayner RayOne EMV IOL can provide excellent distance VA, good intermediate VA and functional VA, with a smooth and continuous defocus curve. A mini-monovision approach additionally supports the binocular visual acuity functions.
