Purpose
New types of monofocal IOL are available on the market recently. The new monofocal plus or enhanced monofocal IOL promise an improved near visual performance with no side effects compared with standard IOL. To examine the results of a new type of an enhanced monofocal IOL we evaluated the binocular distance and intermediate visual acuity of hyperopic and near emmetropic cataract patients after bilateral implantation of an enhanced monofocal IOL four weeks postoperatively.
Setting
Augenzentrum ONE, Alter Markt 1-2, 24105 Kiel
Methods
We retrospectively analized 20 patients/40 eyes four weeks after bilateral Implantation of the RayONE RMV IOL. All patients showed no relevant macular degeneration or corneal pathologies preoperatively. In Patients with corneal astigmatism above 0,75 dpt a toric IOL was used. Target refraction was in the dominant eye emmetropia and in the fellow eye -0.5 dpt. The surgery was performed by a single surgeon. Four weeks postoperatively among other results uncorrected binocular distance visual acuity and intermediate visual acuity and corrected distance visual acuity was examined. For the postoperative refraction subjective measurement was used since the automated refraction showed no exact results.
Results
Mean age of the patients was 76 years. Mean sphere was +2.0dpt (range -0.75 to 5,5dpt) and mean cylinder 1,0 (range 0,0 to 1,75dpt) Corrected distance visual acuity improved from 0,6 logMar to 0,0 LogMar. Binocular UCDVA postoperatively was 0.1 LogMar and binocular UCIVA 0.3 LogMar. No intra- and postoperative complications occoured. No patient complained about increased photopic phenomena.
Conclusions
The RayONE RMV showed good results regarding improvement of UDVA in cataract patients. The UIVA was satisfying and allowed the patients to read newspaper print in intermediate distance and good light conditions. Spectacle independence in daily life significantly increased in this mainly hyperopic group. Visual quality regarding photopic phenomena appeared satisfying.
