To report the clinical outcomes of phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) with amniotic membrane for pediatric band keratopathy.

Ibn Al Haythem center, ALGIERS, ALGERIA

A 10-year-old girl presented with a 3-year history of poor visual acuity and a horizontal gray-white band across paracentral and centra cornea in the left eye. She was diagnosed with band keratopathy after recurrent herpetic uveitis. After one year without recurrence and after failure of treatment with EDTA eye drops, the band keratopathy was treated via PTK using SCHWIND AMARIS 750 excimer laser with an optical treatment zone of 7,5 mm and ablation depth of 110 µm. A therapeutic lens with an amniotic membrane inside was applied at the end of the procedure after applying 0.02% mitomycin C for 20 seconds. The patient was on full-dose antiviral therapy. The patient was followed at three days, one week and every months for six months.

the postoperative course were uneventful. The corrected distance visual acuity improved to 20/40 with a refraction of + 9.0 ( -3.0 ; 45 °). The central corneal thickness decreases from 590 to 550 µm. Corneal transparency was evidently improved. there was no recurrence of herpetic uveitis

PTK is an effective procedure to treat band keratopathy to treat band keratopathy.  The use of an amniotic membrane can accelerate healing and reduce inflammatory phenomena. Early intervention can reduce the risk of developing amblyopia.
