to report the case of a 28 year old lady with anisometropic amblyopia planned for phakic IOL after correction of amblyopia by occlusion.
the patient was treated at a tertiary care hospital, Guru Nanak Eye Center, at New Delhi, India
A 28 year old woman presented to our clinic with complain of diminution of vision. on examination she had high myopia with anisometropia of 5DS with BCVA of 6/6 and 6/24 in the right and left eye. a congenital SOP with head tilt was also uncovered on squint examination. she was started on part time occlusion of the right eye for 6 hours a day for 6 days a week for 6 weeks at the end of which BCVA in the left eye improved to 6/9. occlusion was tapered and when vision was stable, the patient was planned for phakic IOL in the left followed by right eye. the patient did not want surgical correction of SOP. the patient mantains a good vision without glasses in both eyes and there has been no change in the angle of strabismus.
patients may present with amblyopia even in adulthood but there is ample evidence of cortical plasticity being retained in adults and this case shows that even adults deserve a chance at amblyopia therapy. once amblyopia is treated, these patients may also be candidates for refractive surgery.
