Clinical Outcomes From Astigmatism Toleance Of A Nondifractive Extended Focus Lens Compared To An Enhanced Intermediate Focus Monofocal Intraocular Lens

To compare the visual outcomes and astigmatism tolerance results between two different types of improved intermediate focus intraocular lenses (IOL): Acrysof IQ Vivity Extended Vision DFT015 and Tecnis Eyhance ICB00.

This comparative, prospective, non-randomized study included 20 eyes of 20 patients referred for cataract surgery and candidates for non-toric intraocular lens implant with intermediate focus improvement. For this study, the dominant eye of each patient was used. Exclusion criteria was: presence of other eye diseases; previous eye surgery; high axial myopia; corneal astigmatism greater than 0.75 cylindrical diopter (CD); intraoperative or postoperative complications. The ophthalmologic evaluation included measurement of corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), as well as the inverted cylinder astigmatic monocular Defocus visual curve after best corrected refraction with residual 1.5CD refractive error simulation.

Postoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was better in the Eyhance group than in the Vivity group (-0.26 vs. -0.03logMAR, p=0.001w). Both DFT 015 and ICB00 IOL achieved similar tolerance for cylindrical 0.5D induction (p>0.05). The Eyhance ICB00 group sustained good visual acuity for Defocus down to -1.0D (p<0.05) up to 1.5D cylindrical and better results than the Vivity DFT015 group for backhand induction.

Both lenses can tolerate residual astigmatism of up to 0.5D well regardless of orientation, however as residual astigmatism increases, especially against the rule, there is a greater deterioration in visual acuity with the Vivity IOL and better tolerance with the Eyhance IOL.
