Purpose

To assess the influence of preoperative posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) status on the incidence of retinal detachment (RD) after lens surgery in myopic eyes over a period of three years.

Setting

Prospective, multicenter study at 10 active European study centers: the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) MYOpic Pseudophakic REtinal Detachment (MYOPRED) study

Methods

Eyes with an axial length of ≥25.0 mm scheduled for lens surgery were included. Preoperatively and at each follow-up visit funduscopy and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were performed. At sites participating the ultrasound substudy, patients also received B-scan ultrasonography if the hyaloid was not visible on OCT. Patients with a preexisting PVD had one follow-up visit 2 months postoperatively and telephone interviews after 1, 2 and 3 years. Patients without preexisting complete PVD underwent follow-up visits 2, 6 and 12 months after surgery, telephone interviews 2 and 3 years postoperatively. To identify relevant surgical procedures patients were invited to unscheduled visits or relevant surgical reports were sent for verification.

Results

618 eyes of 618 patients were included in the MYOPRED study. The 3-year follow-up visits have been completed. As this is an ESCRS study of high importance, the results could be added to this abstract by the end of June. The final results will be presented at the congress in Vienna.

Conclusions

Conclusions from the ESCRS MYOPRED study regarding the influence of the preoperative PVD status on the incidence of RD after lens surgery in myopic eyes will be presented at the congress.
