Purpose
To assess the clinical outcomes of mix and match implantation of Tecnis® Eyhacne and Tecnis® Synergy and bilateral implantation of Tecnis® Synergy IOLs.
Setting
Prospective clinical study, Department of Ophthalmology, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, Seoul, Korea
Methods
This prospective comparative study was performed to compare the clinical outcomes of two groups, 25 patients and 50 age-related patients with cataracts for each group (Group 1 : Tecnis® Eyhance for the dominant eyes and Tecnis® Synergy for non-dominant eyes / Group 2 : bilateral implantation of Tecnis® Synergy IOLs). The following outcomes were assessed preoperatively and at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively: Visual acuity (UDVA, CDVA, UIVA, UNVA), uncorrected defocus curves, contrast sensitivity (CSV-1000), reading speed test with “Korean, Hangul”, subjective questionnaires for satisfaction, photic phenomenon and visual Visual Functioning Questionnaire (VFQ-25).
Results
Mean decimal outcomes of binocular UDVA, UIVA and UNVA of Group 1,2 were 1.12/0.95/0.87 and 1.01/0.95/0.90, respectively at postoperative 6 months. The percentage of spectacle independence of both groups showed different patterns depending on the foci. Both groups provided overall improvement in Visual Functioning Questionnaire–25(VFQ-25), and the reading speed test using “Korean words” showed similar or better outcomes within the range(0.1-0.8), in group 1.
Conclusions
Mix-and-Match of enhanced monofocal and Trifocal IOLs could be an effective option for improving near visual outcomes with excellent far and intermediate vision compared to bilateral implantation of trifocal IOLs.
