Initial Experience With A New Toric Intraocular Lens Designed For Improved Continuous Range Of Vision

To evaluate our initial experience with the new Synergy Toric intraocular lens for treatment of corneal astigmatism; specifically designed for patients motivated by improving continuous range of vision without sacrificing near visual acuity gains.

Outcomes of 100 patients who underwent cataract / refractive lens exchange surgery with unilateral or bilateral implantation of the TECNIS Synergy Toric lens were reviewed. Age range of patients was 43 to 78 years with corneal astigmatism up to 3.50D. Preliminary one month clinical and patient-reported outcomes were analysed.

The mean distance visual acuity was -0.04 logMAR (range -0.08 to 0.10 logMAR); mean intermediate visual acuity was +0.07 logMAR (range -0.27 to 0.18 logMAR); mean near visual acuity was 0.18 logMAR (range 0.00 to +0.30 logMAR). Mean gain in visual acuity lines was 4 for UCDVA, 4 for UCIVA, and 5 for UCIVA.  IOL stability over time was excellent. Less than 8% of patients experienced severe difficulty with glare, halo or starburst. 87% of patients report being satisfied with the treatment. No intraoperative or early postoperative adverse events related to the IOL have been noted.

Early data suggests this new toric lens is a good option for patients with significant astigmatism interested in improving continuous range of vision and maintaining near vision gains. A low incidence of visual phenomena at 1 month, as well as positive visual outcomes and patient satisfaction was observed. A larger sample size with longer follow-up is warranted.
