Purpose
To analyze the possible changes in corneal astigmatism by studying the surgical induced astigmatism (SIA) in a group of myopic patients who underwent to collamer phakic intraocular lens implantation
Setting
Refractive Surgery Department. Institut Català de Retina. Barcelona (Spain)
Methods
Retrospective analysis of SIA in patients in which a collamer phakic lens was implanted for the treatment of myopia and astigmatism. Corneal higher order aberrations (HOA) after implantation and efficacy and safety of astigmatism correction were also studied. Parameters were assessed in preoperative, one and three months postoperatively.
Results
A total of 127 eyes were included in this study. The mean spherical equivalent was -7.24± 2.12 and a mean astigmatism of -1.55±0.87 (-4.50 - 0.00). Eyes were distributed in low astigmatism for those who has less than 1.5D of cylinder and high astigmatism for those with more than 1.5D. Mean SimK(D), Corneal Astigmatism SimK (D), Mean TCRP (D) and Corneal Astigmatism TCRP (D) were measured using a Scheimpflug-based tomography system. The induced astigmatism was not clinically significant and there were no differences between the SIA in each group (low nor high astigmatism cohorts) No changes in corneal aberrometry (HOA) were found in any of the groups analyzed.
Conclusions
In this study, changes in the corneal astigmatism after collamer phakic lens implantation are analyzed using Scheimpflug technology. We found that corneal astigmatism is not affected after collamer phakic lens implantation for myopia or astigmatism correction. Corneal HOA showed no changes after surgery with collamer phakic lens.
Myopic astigmatism correction with collamer toric lenses is an effective, safe, predictable and stable method.
