Purpose
The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of two state-of-art monofocal toric intraocular lenses (tIOLs). The TECNIS Eyhance Toric II IOL (model DIU), which has properties for improved intermediate vision, was compared with the TECNIS Toric IOL (model ZCT).
Setting
Prospective, monocentric comparative two-armed interventional patient-blinded study.
Methods
A total of 68 eyes are included in this study. So far, 68 patient eyes, with a mean age of 71±9 years, have been included, of which 34 eyes each received the DIU and the ZCT. Postoperative examinations were performed at 1 day, 1 week, and 1 and 3 months. The final follow-up examinations will be termined in April 2023.
Results
Preoperative mean corneal astigmatism was 1.84±0.57 D (1.15-4.26 D). Refractive astigmatism was reduced to -0.61±0.40 D; respectively, -0.53±0.45 D (ZCT) and -0.70±0.32 D (DIU, p=0.093) after 3 months. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) improved from 0.70±0.36 logMAR to 0.13±0.13 logMAR (p<0.001), respectively 0.12±0.14 logMAR (ZCT) and 0.14±0.12 logMAR (DIU, p=0.586). The uncorrected intermediate VA was 0.13±0.11 logMAR (ZCT) and 0.12±0.13 logMAR (DIU, p=0.841). Distance-corrected VA of the groups was 0.04±0.11 logMAR (ZCT) and 0.02±0.04 logMAR (DIU, p=0.235); and distance-corrected intermediate VA was 0.12±0.08 logMAR (ZCT) and 0.15±0.09 logMAR (DIU, p=0.393). IOL-rotation was 2.69±2.54° and 1.99±1.99° for ZCT and DIU (p=0.285).
Conclusions
In this analysis, the Eyhance Toric (DIU model) and Tecnis Toric (ZCT model) demonstrated comparably good clinical results with high rotational stability. Thus, both IOLs can be considered suitable for the reduction of corneal astigmatism. To what extent Eyhance Toric provides improved intermediate vision compared to Tecnis Toric will be after completion of this study.
