Purpose
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of Sedeo excimer laser system in surface ablation procedures.
Setting
This was a prospective, single-center, study of the SEDEO Excimer laser system used to perform trans- epithelial photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) on patients in up-right seated position.
Methods
Patients greater than 21 years of age with overall spherical equivalent for myopes <12D and Hyperopes < 8D fit to undergo PRK were included in the study. Patients with bowman’s membrane and stromal dystrophy indicated for Trans PTK were also included. Patients underwent surface ablation in upright sitting position at the SEDEO system following which Mitomycin C was applied and a BCL was placed. . Post- operatively patients were started on topical antibiotics, steroids and lubricant eyedrops which were tapered over one month. The study subjects were followed up on Day 1, 7, 1 month and 3 months post operatively. The percentage of treated eyes within +/- 0.50D of target refraction was calculated.
Results
This study included 46 eyes out of which Trans PRK was performed on 40 eyes and Trans-PTK was performed on 6 eyes. There was a significant improvement in visual acuity noted in all the treated eyes at 1 month post operatively (p<0.05) with greater than 90% of treated eyes within the target refraction of +/- 0.50D. No adverse events were noted
Conclusions
The SEDEO system provides the benefit of sitting posture surface ablation treatment with no cyclotorsion of the eye. The sitting posture of the laser plus the robotic applicator feature allows the patient to stay in the same position during the procedure. This provides not only a clear increased level of comfort for the patient, but also results in a significantly more ergonomic application and more flexible patient flow in the clinic. Thus the SEDEO excimer laser system is a safe and effective treatment option for surface ablation procedures.
