Purpose

Aim of this study is to assess the visual function and reading performance with AcrySof IQ Vivity (toric and non-toric) IOL vs. standard monofocal AcrySof IQ (toric and non-toric) IOL in a randomized comparative study.

Setting

Vienna Institute for Ocular Surgery (VIROS), a Karl-Landsteiner institute, Hanusch Hospital, Vienna, Austria

Methods

Randomised, prospective, single-center, controlled trial. Randomisation is performed by using an online randomisation system that indicate which patient receives which IOL. Pre-operatively, a slit lamp examination, keratometry and biometry, as well as refraction was performed. Three months after surgery, reading speed with Salzburg Reading Desk at the preferred reading distance, reading behaviour through a novel eye tracking technology at 66cm at photopic and mesopic conditions, visual acuity and Aston Halometer were performed. A questionnaire for quality of vision (McAlinden) was done by the patient.

Results

At the time of abstract submission this study recruitment of patients is still ongoing. Preliminary data of 15 Vivity vs 15 Acrysof IQ patients (of a total of 68 patients) showed a reading speed of 149.3 words/minute vs 133.7 w/m (p>0.05) and a reading time of 11.07 vs 15.83 respectively (SRD). UCDVA was 0.0 LogMAR (ETDRS) for both groups. UCIVA was 0.1 LogMAR vs 0.3 LogMAR (p<0.05) and UCNVA was 0.3 LogMAR vs 0.4 LogMAR (p>0.05)

Conclusions

Preliminary data showed good visual acuity for distance and intermediate vision as well as high patient satisfaction among the Vivity group. Reading behavior and the final assessment of all the 68 patients will be presented at ESCRS.
