Purpose
This was the fourteenth annual survey on the practice patterns of Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) members in cataract surgery.
Setting
Saskatchewan Health Authority, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Methods
In January 2022, the COS office sent an email with a link to the survey on Red Cap to its 247 members whose primary focus is cataract surgery. Two reminders were sent at 2 weeks interval. Approval for the survey was obtained from the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region Ethics Board. All responses were collected anonymously.
Results
All the respondents used povidone iodine preoperatively and most (84.1%) waited one minute or more before draping. The majority of respondents (73%) corrected astigmatism at the time of surgery. Most (93.5%) used a Toric IOL. 49.2% of the respondents used intracameral antibiotics. Moxifloxacin was the most popular (80%). 46.8% of the respondents aimed for monovision. Presbyopia correcting lenses were used by 66.7% of the respondents. Most participants (76.2%) saw their patients on the day after surgery, 15.9% on the same day and 7.9% at one week. In this latter group, 60% would phone the patient on the first day.
Conclusions
Most respondents waited at least 1 minute for the povidone iodine to dry before draping. Presbyopia correcting lenses was used by more than 65% of the respondents and monovision was aimed for by nearly 47%. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, an increasing number of respondents have delayed the first post-op visit.
