Purpose

To report emerging clinical outcomes including complications, post-operative visual acuity, and refractive outcome for SMILE for myopia undertaken with the new VISUMAX 800 femtosecond laser platform.

Setting

Optegra Eye Hospital London

Methods

A retrospective, single centre, non-comparative case series audit of consecutive SMILE procedures for myopia undertaken with the Visumax 800 (Zeiss, Germany) between November 2021 and November 2022 was conducted. Data audited were recorded in the Medisoft electronic medical record system. Procedures were excluded from the analysis if they were secondary procedures or where there was a reason for guarded visual prognosis such as amblyopia.

Results

Results from 496 eyes of 255 patients (127 females and 128 males) were included into this study. Mean patient age was 32 ± 5.8 years. 99% of eyes had no operative complications recorded. Pre-op mean spherical equivalent ranged between +0.00DS to -9.00 DS. Median follow up was 88 days. Postoperatively 99% of eyes achieved 20/40 or better and 84% achieved 20/20 or better. 86% of eyes were within +/- 0.50 or better. Binocularly 100% of patients achieved 20/40 or better, 89% achieved 20/20 or better.

Conclusions

Emerging data show that the Visumax 800 had low operative complication rates and that post operative visual and refractive outcomes were of a very good standard. The Visumax 800 provided a safe and efficacious mode of corneal laser vision correction.
