Purpose
To investigate the usability and safety of a new dye-based capsulotomy centration method in cataract surgery.
Setting
Prospective Trial, University Eye Hospital Bochum, Germany
Methods
A prospective trial with 20 eyes of 10 patients with clinically significant cataract was conducted. During cataract surgery the anterior capsule was stained with a new, high concentrated, trypan blue (Capsublue, Capsulaser). After washout high-resolution images of the anterior capsule were taken. Primary endpoint was the visibility of the stained anterior capsule pole (Mountain-Top sign). Furthermore, the size, intensity and position were measured with a digital tool.
Results
In 20 of 20 eyes (100%) the Mountain-Top sign was seen. Mostly, the sign was nasal inferior with sharp edges. In all cases it was possible to center the capsulotomy on the sign and a 360° overlap between IOL optic and capsule was reached intraoperativly in all cases.
Conclusions
The Mountain-Top sign is a new and easy to use method to effectively identify the center of the anterior capsule. The method has great potential to improve the outcome with premium intraocular lenses in cataract surgery.
