Purpose

To evaluate the efficiency and safety of phakic IOLs in Children that age is less than 18 years old that in  17 eyes of  15 children .

Setting

The autor reports cases of phakic IOL implantation in 15 children and 17 eyes . Age of patients was between 6 to 17 years old. In 13 cases it was a unilateral implantation, in 2 cases it was bilateral implantation. Refractive range were between -11 and -27 .

Methods

Lenses uses were ICL in 13 eyes and IPCL in 4 eyes. Follow up was done for a minimum of 6 months and 2 years. We evaluate post operative refraction, anterior segment, posterior segment, IOP , Vault and specular microscopy.

Results

In all the cases , post operative refraction were -0,5 ( +/- 0,75 ) , VA were 0.6 ( 0.1 to 0.8) , anterior and posterior segment were clear , IOP were 15 ( 11 to 23 ) , one case of high IOP due to topic steroids, Vault were 340 microns ( 311 to 467 microns), specular microscopy were stable in follow up with loss of 2% of endothelial cells. 9 cases needed amblyopia treatment with improvement of 3 lines of VA ( 2 to 5 lines )

Conclusion

Refractive surgery is an elective procedure reserved to adult patients. However, in Children with high anisometropia or malignant myopia , implantation of phakic IOLs could be considered for its efficiency and safety.
