Purpose
Measuring the white-to-white (WTW) distance is indispensable in the preoperative evaluation of cataract or refractive surgery candidates and in determining the appropriate haptic size of partially newly developed phakic intraocular lenses (IOLs). This distance can be measured quickly and easily by various methods. However, inconsistencies between reported results raise questions about the interchangeability of these measures. Although the compatibility of various devices in measurements has been analyzed in previous studies, such a study has not yet been conducted in the national sense. Based on this, our study aimed to analyze the compatibility of WTW measurements taken with IOLMaster 500 and Pentacam devices to be used in the calculation of phakic IOLs in Turkish society.
Setting
Cross-sectional retrospective design.
Methods
A total of 66 eyes from 66 cataract surgery candidates were included in the study. WTW distance measurements taken by both devices were recorded and analyzed. One-sample t-test was performed to compare the mean values of the WTW distance. Bland-Altman analysis was used to evaluate the agreement between the measurements of both devices.
Results
The mean age of the participants was 63.42±18.27 years and 20s (60.6%) were male. Mean WTW distances measured by IOLMaster 500 and Pentacam were 11.80±0.48 mm and 11.50±0.56 mm, respectively (P<0.001) (limits of agreement; 0.19 lower limit, 0.41 upper limit; % 95 CI).
Conclusion
In our study, it was shown that the IOLMaster 500 device gave significantly higher WTW measurements than the Pentacam device. Therefore, these 2 devices should not be used interchangeably for WTW measurement. We think that it would be beneficial to use the devices recommended by the preferred phakic IOL company.
