Purpose

The aim of the ongoing prospective study is to analyze and compare measurements of the axial length (AL) in eyes after implantation of a phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) by the Pentacam AXL (Wave) and the IOL Master 700 and to develop an adapted measurement mode for eyes with implanted pIOL for Pentacam AXL (Wave).

Setting

Department of Ophthalmology at the Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany

Methods

In this ongoing prospective clinical study, AL of eyes with pIOL was measured with two different optical biometers:  Pentacam AXL (Wave) (P) and the IOL Master 700 (I). With both devices, three AL measurements per eye were performed in the measurement mode for phakic eyes (P) and for eyes with pIOL (I). The mean values, standard deviations (±SD), and coefficients of variation (CoV) were calculated. Means were compared with a paired t-test. The analysis of the success rates was also part of the evaluation.

Results

20 eyes of 11 patients, 6 male and 5 female, with a mean age of 32 (±5.5) years were included. Mean values of the AL measurements were 26,22 (±0,021)mm for I and 26,02 (±0,010)mm for P with a CoV of 0.08% and 0.04%. P measured statistically significant (p<0.001) shorter than I. A strong correlation could be shown for both devices with r = 0.9934. The success rate was 47% for I and 100% for P.

Conclusion

The data shows statistically significant shorter AL-Measuremetns for Pentacam AXL compared with IOL Master 700 with a mean difference of 0.21mm. This indicates the requirement of an adapted measurement mode for eyes with pIOL. A clear difference was also shown when looking at the success rates of the measurements.

Further AL measurements will follow.
