Purpose
To compare two commonly used devices for keratoconus detection – a Scheimpflug imaging device and a spectral domain high resolution anterior segment optical coherence tomography device (OCT)
Setting
This Study is conducted retrospectively at the Johannes Kepler University Clinic Linz, Austria, MCIII, Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry in its entirety.
Methods
Patient data was collected from our Keratoconus outpatient clinic in a retrospective fashion. In all cases a Scheimpflug measurement (Pentacam HR, Oculus, Germany) and a spectral domain OCT (MS-39, CSI, Italy) were available. A detailed comparison including standard keratoconus screening parameters were included as well as epithelial map measurements.
Results
In total, 200 eyes of 100 patients were included in this study. Mean Kmax was 51.2 D (SD: 6.4; median: 50.3D, range 42.99 to 66.79) and the mean difference between both devices was 0.3 D (SD: 1.2 D; median: 0.34, max diff: 2.7 D). The mean thinnest point of the cornea was 473 µm (SD: 60.7; median: 483, range: 276 to 543) and the difference between both devices was 2.1 µm (SD: 9.5; median: 1, max difference: 18µm). Limits of agreement as well as a correlation between inter-device agreement and severity of keratoconus will be presented at the meeting.
Conclusion
On average the investigated Scheimpflug device and the spectral domain OCT showed no relevant differences. However, especially in the case of severe keratoconus a significant difference was observed.
