Purpose

Determine the prevalence of patients with the diagnosis of keratoconus and keratoconus in Emiratis underdoing cataract surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi as a way of better understanding the burden of ectatic corneal disease in the region.

Setting

Hospital-based multispecialty academic practice

Methods

Retrospective review of all patients with Emirati nationality undergoing cataract surgery during the six-month study period (May through October 2021) who had an interpretable Galilei tomography as part of their standard presurgical evaluation. Two of four cornea specialists evaluated and diagnosed all subjects in a randomized manner. If there was disagreement on the diagnosis, a third examiner evaluated the subject, masked to the other examiner’s answers.

Results

311 patients met inclusion criteria. In this study population, 6.1% (n=19) had keratoconus and 20.6% (n=64) were keratoconus suspects. Corneal scarring, both trachomatous and from other causes, was common in the study population resulting in irregular astigmatism and other corneal tomographic abnormalities that did not represent ectatic disease

Conclusion

The diagnosis of keratoconus and keratoconus suspect was very common in the population presenting for treatment of non-ectatic ocular disease in UAE.
