Purpose
To evaluate and compare the post-operative outcome of two different scleral fixated IOL concepts, the Yamane method (ZA9003, J&J, USA) and the Carlevale IOL (FIL-SSF, Soleko, Italy).
Setting
Kepler University Clinic, Ophthalmology department, Linz, Austria
Methods
Patients who underwent sutureless scleral fixated IOL implantation between 2018 and 2022 were included in this non-randomised study. Group A included implantation of a 3-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOL (Tecnis ZA9003) with scleral tunnel fixation and group B implantation of a hydrophilic acrylic single-piece intraocular lens with scleral self-anchoring haptics (FIL-SSF Carlevale). Study examinations were performed one day and two months after surgery. Study examinations included optical biometry (IOLMaster700, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany), corneal tomography including tilt measurement (Casia2, Tomey Corp, Japan and MS-39, CSO, Italy) and topography (Osiris, CSO, Italy) autorefraction, subjective refraction and corrected as well as uncorrected visual acuity.
Results
In total, 71 patients were enrolled in this study. 51 patients were included in group A, 20 patients in group B. Mean absolute tilt for group B was lower than for group A (4.9± 1.0 and 6 ±1.8, respectively). Mean absolute decentration and was lower in group B than in group A (0.3±0.1 versus 0.4±0.2). Regarding the absolute refractive error, group B produced a lower mean error (0.5±0.4) than group A (0.7±0.6).
Conclusion
Group A generates more stable results, implying that the Carlevale IOL is less susceptible for postoperative tilt and refractive errors. However, a larger analysis is needed for validation of the observed trend and will be provided at the ESCRS meeting.
