Purpose

To report the clinical features, surgical techniques and outcomes of secondary Piggy back IOL (Intra-Ocular Lens) implantation for correction of residual refractive errors following lens based surgery

Setting

Ophthalmology Department, University Hospital Ayr, Ayr, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Methods

7 eyes of six patients underwent secondary piggyback IOL implantation to correct unplanned residual refractive errors following lens based surgery. The indications varied from refractive errors arising from penetrating keratoplasty, post laser vision correction and refractive lens exchange. All eyes had stable residual refractive error before piggyback IOL surgery was planned. Manifest refraction and pseduophakic biometry data was used on a propriety online calculator to calculate the power of pibbyback IOL. All surgical procedures were performed under topical anaesthesia by a single experienced surgeon.

Results

There were no intraoperative complications. The mean uncorrected distance visual acuity improved from preoperative 6/18 (Snellen) to 6/7.5 unaided in the postoperative period.

Conclusion

Use of  secondary piggy back IOL is an safe, and effective option to correct residual refractive error in pseudophakic patients.
