Purpose

To evaluate the efficacy and patient reported outcomes of the Q-Flex 640PM intraocular lens with elevated phase shift technology 2.0 (EPS 2.0).

Setting

Qvision, Ophthalmology Department, VITHAS Almería, Spain

Methods

Data from 41 subjects were retrospectively retrieved from our historical database. Corrected and uncorrected visual acuities were measured at far (4m), intermediate (66cm) and near (40cm) distances. Monocular visual acuity defocus curve (VADC) with best distance correction was measured at the 3-month follow-up. Patient reported outcomes were assessed at 12-month by means of visual function questionnaire (VF-14), Patient Reported Spectacle Independence Questionnaire (PRSIQ) and 5 single questions to report the cumulate percentage of patients achieving satisfaction with postoperative uncorrected vision, bothersome to photic phenomena, and likely to be operated on with the same procedure.

Results

Mean monocular corrected distance visual acuities were 0.00, 0.08 and 0.09 logMAR, at far, intermediate and near distances, respectively. Corresponding uncorrected binocular visual acuities were 0.01, 0.02 and 0.04 logMAR. The highest peak of the monocular VADC was at infinity (0 D) with a value of 0.05 logMAR, the slope of the defocus curve decreased up to 0.17 logMAR at 66 cm (-1.5D) and increased again up to a second peak of 0.1 logMAR at 40 cm (-2.5 D). All activities of the VF-14 showed little or no difficulties except for reading small letters for which a 2.43% showed moderate difficulty. Total spectacle independence was achieved in 85.4% of patients with only 2.4% requiring spectacles for intermediate vision. More than 90.2% of patients were satisfied or very satisfied with their vision without spectacles. Only 7.3% of patients were bothersome by photic phenomena and 92.6% of patients were likely or very likely to be operated again with the same IOL.

Conclusion

Technology EPS 2.0 of Liberty trifocal showed better intermediate vision without impairment of distance and near visual acuities in comparison to the previously reported literature for EPS 1.0. Smoother transition of visual acuity from far to near distance was achieved with this new version.
