Purpose

To evaluate the visual outcomes at 3 months after bilateral implantation of a new optical system comprised of two complementary IOLs in a routine cataract and refractive lens exchange population.

Setting

The study included patients operated between 2020-2021 in Oculens Clinic, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. There is no financial disclosure.

Methods

Prospective evaluation of 20 patients (40 eyes) implanted bilaterally with Mini Well EDOF IOL (Sifi SPA., Italy) in the dominant eye and Mini WELL PROXA EDOF IOL (Sifi Spa., Italy) in the non-dominant eye with emmetropia as the target. Visual acuity at distance, intermediate (60 cm) and near (40 and 44 cm) with and without distance correction, refractive error, binocular photopic defocus curve and contrast sensitivity curve with best corrected distance refraction were measured. Subjective outcomes in terms of visual function, spectacle independence, lighting independence, dysphotopsia and overall satisfaction were assessed at three months.

Results

13 patients were females (65%) and 7 were males (35%). The mean age of the patients was 54,6 years +/- 16.60. The Post-operative Subjective Spherical Equivalent (SE) at 3 months was lower than 0,5D in 85% of eyes. Three months after surgery, the mean binocular uncorrected distance (UCDVA), intermediate (UCIVA) and near (UCNVA) visual acuities were 0.06, 0.01 and 0.005 logMAR respectively, while the mean binocular corrected distance (CDVA), intermediate (DCIVA) and near (DCNVA) were visual acuities were 0,028, 0,05 and 0,005 logMAR. The binocular defocus curve with distance correction shower approximately 5D of depth of field with an acuity better than 0.2 logMAR. Patient satisfaction was high, with a low occurence of dysphotopsia, 18 out of 20 patients did not experience photic phenomena at 3 months postoperatively.

Conclusion

The new optical system comprised of two complementary EDOF IOLs showed good visual performance at all distances with high patient satisfaction and a low occurrence of visual disturbances.
