Purpose
To report early postoperative clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction with bilateral implantation of a novel extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL (Asqelio Toric EDOF, AST Products, USA).
Setting
Methods
122 eyes of 66 patients were included in this study and patients were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 (32 patients) consisted of patients with the novel EDOF IOL (Asqelio EDOF Toric), and group 2 (34 patients) was the control group including patients with standard monofocal IOL (Tecnis, Johnson and Johnson, USA). Patients with ophthalmic diseases except for cataracts and who had expected postoperative astigmatism greater than 1 D were excluded. Patients were followed up 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after the surgery. The uncorrected and corrected monocular and binocular distance, intermediate near visual acuity (VA in logMAR) and depth of focus were measured at 3 months. Patient complaints such as halo, glare, and starburst were also recorded. Spectacle independence for daily routine activities was investigated.
Results
While the mean uncorrected monocular distance, intermediate and near VA were 0,11±0,03, 0,19±0,07, 0,37±0,05 logMAR in group 1, they were 0,14±0,07, 0,43±0,05, and 0,61±0,08 logMAR respectively in group 2. The mean uncorrected binocular distance, intermediate and near VA were 0,01±0,03, 0,09±0,06, 0,32±0,04 logMAR in group 1 and they were 0,01±0,03, 0,3±0,06, and 0,55±0,06 logMAR respectively in group 2. Although no statistical differences were observed between the two groups for monocular and binocular uncorrected distance VA (p=0,10 and p=0,90), monocular and binocular uncorrected intermediate and near VA were better in group 1 than in group 2 (p<0,01). The mean monocular depth of focus at 0,3 logMAR VA thresholds was 1,60 D in group 1 and 1,04 D in group 2 (p<0,01) and the mean binocular depth of focus was 2,07 D in group 1 and 1,47 D in group 2 (p<0,01). Posterior capsule opacification and complications resulting in IOL explantation were not observed in any patient. Photopic phenomena were detected in 9% of the patients in group 1 and 3% of the patients in group 2. Spectacle independence was %83 in group 1 for daily activities.
Conclusion
