Purpose
To asses anterior scleral thickness (AST) at several eccentricities and scleral regions in a healthy population using swept source-OCT.
Setting
FISABIO Oftalmología Médica
University of Valencia
Methods
Cross-sectional and prospective study with 50 eyes of 50 healthy patients aged between 18 and 45 years recruited from FISABIO Ophthalmological Medical Centre and University of Valencia. All patients underwent a comprehensive ophthalmological exam including subjective refractive error, slit lamp biomicroscopy, axial length (AL) measurement with IOL Master 700 (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany), corneal analysis with Pentacam HR (Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany) and intraocular pressure with Corvis ST (Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany). The AST was analysed across four scleral zones (nasal, temporal, superior, and inferior meridian) at three scleral locations (1, 2, and 3-mm posterior to the scleral spur) using the Casia 2 (AS SS-OCT, Tomey, Japan). Only eyes with AL between 22 and 26 mm and spherical equivalent (SE) less than -6.00 D were included. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to assess AST differences throughout scleral eccentricity, scleral region and to explore the interaction between eccentricity and region. A multivariate model was created to associate AST with several ocular parameters.
Results
Conclusion
Tissue thickness varied significantly among meridians supporting the hypothesis of the asymmetrical expansion of the ocular globe. The AST was associated with several factors as axial length, central corneal thickness and intraocular pressure.
