Purpose
The aim of the present investigation is to assess the performance and safety of the Cristalens multifocal ARTIS SYMBIOSE toric intraocular lenses (IOLs), designed to offer a continuous sharp vision from 40 to 90 cm thanks to the MID and PLUS complementarity.
Setting
Methods
Age-related cataract patients, age between 50 and 85 years old, with corneal astigmatism needing a cylinder correction between 0.75 to 3.75D at the IOL plane were recruited in the study. These patients were implanted with the ARTIS SYMBIOSE T IOL. This single-center prospective study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos (Madrid, Spain) and was conducted in accordance with the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki. Main outcome measures measured were refractive error and binocular uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA and CDVA), binocular corrected distance intermediate visual acuity (CDIVA) at 80 and 60 cm, and binocular corrected distance near visual acuity (CDNVA).
Results
14 patients were included in this study with a follow-up of 150-210 days. IOL power was calculated using the on-line Cristalens Toric Calculator medical device. Mean spherical equivalent was -0.02±0.44D. UDVA and CDVA were 0.03±0.09 logMAR and -0.04±0.07 logMAR, respectively. At intermediate vision, mean CDIVA was 0.04±0.07 logMAR and 0.01±0.07 logMAR at 80 and 60 cm, respectively. At near vision, CDNVA was 0.06±0.06 logMAR.
Conclusion
Our preliminary study shows that the ARTIS SYMBIOSE T IOL provides good visual acuity at different distances after its implantation with an excellent refractive accuracy. The current study is still ongoing, and additional data are expected to collect in the coming months to confirm these outcomes.
