Purpose

To evaluate the refractive and visual outcomes following cataract surgery and implantation of a new enhanced monofocal extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting

The study was performed in 2022, in Oculens Clinic, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The are no financial disclosures.

Methods

30 eyes of 20 patients who underwent implantation of the EVOLUXTMIOL (SIFI SPA., Italy) were enrolled in this study. Main outcome measures were refractive error, corrected and uncorrected distance visual acuity (CDVA, UCDVA), uncorrected and distance corrected intermediate visual acuity at 60 cm (UIVA, DCIVA). Monocular visual acuity at different vergences (defocus curve) was obtained. Patients were evaluated at 1 and 3 months postoperatively.

Results

At both 1 and 3 months follow-up, all eyes showed a postoperative spherical equivalent within +/- 0,75D and 90% of the eyes within +/- 0,05D. 100& of eyes showed UDVA and CDVA of 0,1 logMAR or better. Monocular DCIVA better than 0.3 logMAR was achieved in 90% of eyes. Defocus curves showed a depth of focus at 0,2 logMAR of 2 diopters (D). No visual disturbaces were reported in the whole sample during the entire follow-up.

Conclusion

The current study shows that this EDOF IOL provides good biometrical predictability and visual performance at far and intermediate distances. The lens may be considered for patients interested in reducing spectacle dependence at intermediate distances.
