Purpose
To evaluate visual performance and quality of life after bilateral implantation of
two extended depth of focus intraocular lenses (EDOF IOLs) with different features.
Setting
Ophthalmic Unit, Department of Neurosciences,
Biomedicine and Movement Sciences, University of Verona, Italy.
Methods
This Prospective clinical study. comprised 60 eyes of 30 patients with senile cataract candidates to
phacoemulsification and bilateral implantation of the Mini WELL IOL (dominant eye) and the
Mini WELL PROXA IOL (non-dominant eye) within a month. The main outcome measures,
over a 3-months follow-up period, were uncorrected and corrected visual acuity at different
distances (33, 60 cm and 4 m), defocus curve, contrast sensitivity. Patient’s satisfaction
was evaluated by mean of the NEI-RQL-42 questionnaire.
Results
At 90 days binocular uncorrected visual acuity for distance was 0.03±0.11 logMAR, for intermediate was 0.05±0.10 logMAR, for near at 40 cm was-0.03±0.08 logMAR and for near at 33 cm was 0.06±0.08 logMAR. Statistically significant differences between the two EDOF IOLs in favor of Mini WELL PROXA IOL were observed for uncorrected near visual acuity at 40 and 33 cm (p <0.001 and p <0.001, respectively) and for distance corrected near visual acuity at 40 cm (p <0.001). The differences in photopic, mesopic and scotopic distance corrected contrast curves between the two centers and between the two IOLs were not statistically significant. Significant differences between the two IOLs in the defocus curves were reported at +2.0 D (p=0.001), +1.5D (p=0.008), +1.0D (p=0.019), -0.5D (p=0.003), -3.0D (p=0.021), -3.5D (p <0.001), and -4.0D (p <0.001).
Conclusion
Bilateral implantation of Mini WELL IOL and the Mini WELL PROXA IOL
allowed to achieve good quantity and quality of vision.
