Purpose

To compare outcomes of phacoaspiration with Cionni ring-assisted posterior-chamber intraocular lens implantation (PCIOL) versus lensectomy with anterior vitrectomy (AV) and sutured transscleral fixation of the IOL (TSFIOL) in the management of a subluxated lens.

Setting

magrabi eye hospital

Methods

In this retroepective comparative interventional study, one eye of children with a bilateral subluxated lens was randomized to undergo phacoaspiration with PCIOL using a Cionni ring (group A), and the other eye underwent lensectomy with TSFIOL (group B). The outcome measures included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in logMAR units and rates of complications at 12-month follow-up visits.

Results

18 eyes of 9 children (age: 3-16 years) were included in the study. There was no significant difference in the BCVA on comparing the two groups at month 12. Postoperative complications in group A included PCO in 8 patients and transient high IOP in 2 patients. In group B optic capture in 2 cases and ciliary bleeding in 3 cases were recorded.

Conclusion

No significant difference in the visual outcomes and rates of complications at month 12. The decision to choose either technique may be based on the surgeon's skill and experience.
