Purpose

The aim of our work is to report the experience ( Epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and prognostic profile of children with aniridia ) of our pediatric ophthalmology department  about 30 eyes

Setting

Descriptive study

Methods

Retrospective study from 1996 to 2022 about 30 eyes .

Results

The average age is 83.35 months . Male at 53% and female at 47% . 1 patient a history including a family history in his mother and siblings .46% with nystagmus. 20% of the eyes were with corneal involvement (i.e. 6 eyes: 1 eye with slight corneal edema, 1 with megalocornea, 4 with corneal dystrophy). 56.6% of the lenses are cataract (5.8% posterior subcapsular cataract, 5.88% anterior subcapsular cataract, 23.5% posterior polar, 11.7% nuclear, 35.2% total white, 5.8-8% with posterior and cortical subcapsular component simultaneously, 5.88% subtotal, 5.88% nuclear with posterior subcapsular component). 30% of lenses were dislocated .3.33% of the lenses had an anterior lenticonus . 30% of aniridia were associated with glaucoma .33.3% of fundus where passage were possible: 22.22% were normal and the rest pathological (4 papillae with papillary pallor, 2 retinas in appearance of pepper and salt, 2 macular hypoplasia, 1 retinal detachment) . Glaucoma: 2 of the 9 eyes with glaucoma were operated on and the rest under hypotonic medical treatment . Cataract: 13 operated eyes . All children received optical correction and amblyopia treatment. All abdominal ultrasounds were normal . The gain in visual acuity on average was 1 line after therapeutic measures. The average visual acuity was 1.92 /10 .

Conclusion

Aniridia is rare but can significantly and progressively impair vision by reaching the entire eyeball with polymorphic manifestations . Management of aniridia remains difficult , it must be both proactive and responsive, with medical or surgical management or both of them . In sporadic forms an abdominal ultrasound is necessary to rule out the presence of Wilms tumor.
