Purpose

The purpose of the current study was to assess the axial length agreement and the acquisition rate between two optical biometers, based on swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), in eyes with dense cataracts.

Setting

Oftalvist, Alicante, Spain

Methods

For this study, the following inclusion criteria were considered: eyes with nuclear, cortical, or posterior subcapsular cataracts with grade ≥3 considering the LOCS III classification. This study was approved by the ethics committee of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos (Madrid) and was registered in the clinicaltrials.gov database (registration number: NCT05239715). In this study, the measurements obtained with the optical biometers Argos and Anterion (based on SS-OCT technology) were analyzed. The optical biometer measurement sequence was random.

Results

In this comparative study, 35 eyes have been analyzed. Mean age of the patients included was 70.12±8.77 years and the mean LOCS III grade was 3.58±0.9 (ranging from 3 to 6). The average value of the axial length for the two devices was 23.98±1.45 mm (ranging from 22.13 to 28.38) and 24.24±2.15 mm (ranging from 22.15 to 33.22), for the Argos and Anterion SS-OCT optical biometers, respectively. The agreement study for the axial length measurements between the two optical biometers revealed that the mean difference between the Argos and the Anterion SS-OCT devices was 0.01±0.05 mm. In relation to the acquisition rate, this was 100% (35 eyes) for the Argos optical biometer and 94.28% (33 eyes) for the Anterion optical biometer.

Conclusion

The current study shows the measurements obtained using the two optical biometers for axial length. Both SS-OCT optical biometers showed a high acquisition rate in eyes with dense cataracts, being slightly higher for the Argos optical biometer.
