Purpose
This study aims to compare the clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction between an enhanced depth of focus (EDOF) LuxSmartÔ IOL (Bausch & Lomb) and an advanced monofocal IOL (Tecnis Eyhance ICB00, Johnson) in patients who had undergone bilateral cataract surgery.
Setting
Methods
This study included 132 eyes of 66 patients. Three groups were defined according to implanted IOL: control group (monofocal IOL, Tecnis PCB00, 22 patients), Eyhance group (advanced monofocal IOL, Tecnis Eyhance ICB00, 22 patients) and LuxSmart group (EDOF IOL, LuxSmart, 22 patients). Best-corrected (CDVA) and uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) at 66cm and uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) at 40cm were assessed. Binocular defocus curve was registered. Catquest-9SF questionnaire was used to evaluate vision associated quality of life. The presence of photopic phenomena was evaluated.
Results
Monocular UDVA and CDVA did not differ between groups. The average binocular UIVA was higher in Luxmart and Eyhance groups than in controls (20/32 vs. 20/40 p < 0.001). Both LuxSmart and Eyhance provided longer plateau in defocus curve than controls. LuxSmart provided a sustained visual acuity of 0.3 logMAR or better between +1.00D and -2.00D, whereas Eyhance provided a sustained visual acuity of 0.3 logMAR or better between +1.00 and -1.50 D. Photic phenomena did not differ between groups. Luxmart and Eyhance groups showed better spectacle independence for intermediate daily-life activities than controls. There was no difference between Luxmart and Eyhnace regarding spectacle independence.
Conclusion
This study found that both Eyhance ICB00 and Luxmart provided higher uncorrected intermediate vision than a monofocal IOL, without compromising distance vision or increasing the risk photic phenomena. Although Luxmart defocus curve showed a smoother transition between distance and intermediate vision than Eyhance, there were no difference regarding spectacle independence for intermediate daily-life activities. These findings show positive visual outcomes for both Tecnis Eyhance ICB00 and Luxmart IOLs, with a comparable performance for distance and intermediate visions.
