Purpose

To compare the clinical and patient-reported outcomes in patients implanted with two modalities of trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs)

Setting

Department of Ophthalmology, Vithas Medimar International Hospital, Alicante, Spain

Methods

Randomised clinical trial enrolling 60 subjects (age, 47-75 years) undergoing cataract surgery with implantation of one of two trifocal diffractive IOLs: Finevision POD F (PhysIOL, Liège, Belgium) (Group FV, 30 eyes) and RayOne (Rayner Intraocular Lenses, Ltd.,Worthing, UK) (Group RO, 30 eyes). Visual acuity, distance (CSV-1000) and near contrast sensitivity (CS) (OpticTrain), and perception of visual disturbances (QoV questionnaire) were evaluated at 1 month after surgery

Results

No significant differences were found between groups in uncorrected distance (p=0.645), intermediate (p=0.803) and near visual acuity (p=0.645). Likewise, no significant differences were found between groups in the level of eyes with spherical equivalent within ±0.50 D (FV 88.3% vs. RO 95.0%, p=0.380). Regarding distance contrast sensitivity (CS), significantly better values were found for the spatial frequency of 6 cycles/º in RO group (1.7±0.2 vs. 1.9±0.3, p=0.010). In contrast, no significant differences were found between groups in near CS (p≥0.341). Finally, a non-statistically significant trend was found in RO group to obtain lower Rasch-calibrated scores of the QoV questionnaire compared to FV group in terms of frequency (FV 29.4±14.1 vs. RO 25.1±12.3, p=0.325), severity (FV 23.1±13.1 vs. RO 16.8±10.7, p=0.117) and bothersomeness (FV 18.2±14.8 vs. RO 13.2±10.2, p=0.303) of photic phenomena.

Conclusion

The two trifocal IOLs evaluated in the current study are effective for a distance, intermediate and near visual rehabilitation, although the RayOne IOL provides better distance visual quality, with a trend to minor impact of photic phenomena
