Purpose
To demonstrate and describe the possible applications of the forceps needle, a novel surgical device combining scleral perforation, intraocular grasping and externalization of IOL haptics, sutures or other intraocular structures - with subsequent flanging if indicated - in a single instrument.
Setting
Department of Ophthalmology, Academic Teaching Hospital of St. John of God, Vienna, Austria
Sigmund Freud University Medical School, Vienna, Austria
Methods
The forceps needle consists of a beveled needle-shaped tip with a micro-grasping forceps. It therefore combines excellent piercing properties with the advantages of a forceps, allowing for accurate insertion of IOL haptics, sutures or other intraocular structures into the needle. Reliable externalization with minimal risk of slippage is facilitated by the high grasping force.
Results
All procedures at our department could be performed successfully using the forceps needle.
Conclusions
The forceps needle facilitates various surgical procedures, especially regarding the treatment of aphakic patients. We intend to give a detailed overview of the possible uses of this surgical device.
