He established the Heidelberg Ophthalmological Society, and from the pages of "Klinische Monatsblaetter für Augenheilkunde" and practice in Rostock University, he educated a large number of young physicians. The author took some elements from Volume XXVII, published in Stuttgart by Verlag von Ferdinand Enke in 1889. This volume includes scientific announcements, news, examining methods, complications after surgical procedures, etc. The book also contains some plates to enrich the articles. There are anatomical engravings in the text and even a color lithographic plate of ophthalmoscopic findings
Conclusions
In the second half of the 19th century, Ophthalmology was established as a separate specialty in surgery. Carl Wilhelm von Zehender was a man who took the lead in this. His writings, practice, and experience were the foundations to support it. He worked hard to build the Ophthalmologic Clinic of Rostock University and was a founding member of the Heidelberg Ophthalmological Society. Von Zehender also invented two ophthalmoscopes in 1854 and an auto-ophthalmoscope in 1863, all of which bear his name. All these reveals the value and the inspiring route of Carl Wilhelm von Zehender in Medicine.
