Purpose

To investigate the distribution of the most essential ocular higher order aberrations (HOA) in healthy eyes for a younger and an elderly population.

Setting

Department of Ophthalmology at the Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany.

I.R.C.C.S.-G.B. Bietti Foundation, Rome, Italy.

QVision Vithas Hospital Almería, Almería, Spain

Methods

In this ongoing study, phakic eyes without any known ocular pathologies were measured with the Pentacam AXL Wave. These Measurements (only measurements with good quality scores were included) were retrospectively analysed according to the following ocular HOA: Coma (Z3-1 and Z31), Trefoil (Z3-3 and Z33) and Spherical Aberrations (Z40) for an optical zone of 4mm. The data was clustered with respect to the age of the patients into two groups – a younger (≤ 50 years) and an elderly (> 50 years) group.

Mean values and standard deviations were calculated for both study groups, means were compared with an independent t-test.

Results

Until now 216 patients (179 right and 174 left eyes) took part in this study. The younger group (Y) consists of 191 eyes and the patients were on average 32 ±9,4 years old. In the elderly group (E) 162 eyes were included and patient were on average 65 ±10,2 years old.

Z3-1: mean=0,015Y/-0,016E µm* ±0,053Y/0,091E; Z31: mean=-0,009Y/-0,018E µm ±0,042Y/0,073E; Z3-3: mean=-0,035Y/-0,063E µm* ±0,047Y/0,084E; Z33: mean=-0,004Y/0,011E µm ±0,037Y/0,07E; Z40: mean=0,028Y/0,057E µm* ±0,034Y/0,049E. An asterisk indicates a significant difference (p<.05) between the means.

Conclusions

It could be confirmed that elderly eyes have greater ocular higher order aberrations than younger. Z3-1 and Z33 even showed a sign change what underlines also the considerable changes the eye undergoes with age with respect to HOA.

This ongoing study provides an excellent basis in order to establish normative data for HOA. However, a much greater population, including patients of all age groups, must be examined so that a more meaningful clustering, e.g. 10 years steps, can be applied.
