Purpose

To evaluate the visual and optical recovery of SMILE at the plasma threshold for myopia and myopic astigmatism according to preoperative refraction at 1 day, 1 month and 1 year.

Setting

Bellecour Vision Clinic, France

Methods

This retrospective study included 251 eyes of 210 patients separated into 3 groups : Low Myopia (99 eyes) with a mean spherical equivalent (SE) of -2.18 ± 0.63 diopter (D) ; Moderate Myopia (109 eyes) with mean SE of -4.38 ± 0.91 D and High Myopia (43 eyes), with a mean SE of – 7.08 ± 0.80 D.

Visual acuity (VA), Contrast Sensitivity (CS), Refraction, Modulation Transfer Function Cut off (MTF cut off), Objective Scatter Index (OSI) and Strehl Ratio (SR) were measured in preoperative, at 1 day ,1 month and 1 year postoperatively.

Results

At 1 Day, 1 Month and 1 Year, all eyes presented a CDVA of 20/20 Snellen.

At 1month and 1 year postoperatively, the mean UDVA and mean SE were unchanged in the 3 groups.

At 1 month, the 3 groups recovered the preoperative CS values. At 1 year, the 6 Cycles per degree (CPD) and 12 CPD are better than the preoperative values in the 3 groups.

At follow up visits, the OSI values decreased significantly in the 3 groups.  At 1 year, the low myopia group recovered the preoperative values (0.58 to 0.61). The OSI values were slightly higher than the preoperative values in the moderate and high myopia groups (0.62 to 0.70 and 0.76 to 0.92, respectively).

Conclusions

Visual and optical quality improved in the three groups during the first year postoperatively. These postoperatively results  were related to the preoperative refraction.
