Purpose
To compare the qualitative and quantitative visual parameters following myopic corrective surgery with SMILE versus LASIK using the Ray Tracing technology.
Setting
Cataract, Cornea and Refractive Services of Advanced Eye Centre, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India.
Methods
152 eyes (72 patients) underwent either SMILE or wavefront optimized LASIK in contralateral eye. The qualitative and quantitative visual parameters using iTrace, contrast sensitivity, Schirmer score and subjective questionnaire were compared at baseline versus 3 months postoperatively.
Results
Comparing SMILE versus LASIK, postoperative MRSE was -0.05 ± 0.20 versus -0.02 ± 0.17 (p=0.47), Corneal aberrations induced per diopter were 0.05±0.05 versus 0.08±0.06 (p=0.017), spherical aberration 0.003± 0.008 versus 0.010± 0.013, coma 0.02± 0.019 versus 0.02± 0.019, Strehl ratio -0.05± 0.072 versus -0.08±0.078 (p=0.027), modulation transfer function -0.02±0.059 versus -0.02± 0.058 (p=0.493), Q value: 0.16±0.073 versus 0.18±0.064. Schirmer’s and dry eye score was better with SMILE.
Conclusions
Myopic eyes undergoing SMILE showed relatively superior refractive, visual and aberrometric outcomes compared to wavefront optimised LASIK.
