Purpose

Aim of this study is to investigate the effect of IPL therapy in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction on dry eye parameters as well as subjective complaints

Setting

Vienna Institute for Ocular Surgery (VIROS), a Karl-Landsteiner institute, Hanusch Hospital, Vienna, Austria

Methods

This is a prospective, randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind study. After baseline examination 3 IPL-treatment appointments and 2 additional follow-ups will be scheduled (3 and 6 months post IPL treatment). IPL treatment using the LacryStim System is performed in accordance with the treatment protocol provided by the manufacturer. Three treatments are scheduled.

Blocked randomization is used to randomize the study eye of each subject using an online randomization software. The fellow eye serves as the control eye. Study eye receives the standard energy dose as recommended by the manufacturer. The control eye is treated using low energy dose energy (1J/ cm2) as sham treatment, ensuring blinding of the respective patient

Results

At the time of abstract submission this study and recruitment of patients is still ongoing. Final data will be shown at the ESCRS conference

Conclusions

As previously published by multiple authors, IPL treatment is safe and effective treatment modality for meibomian gland dysfunction
