Purpose

The aim of this prospective clinical study was to compare the axial length (AL) measurements in pseudophakic silicone oil-filled eyes from Pentacam AXL (Wave) (OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH) and IOL Master 700 (Carl Zeiss Meditec) and to establish and verify a measurement mode for AL measurements with the Pentacam AXL (Wave) for pseudophakic silicone oil-filled eyes.

Setting

Departement of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Germany

Institute of Medical Biometry, University of Heidelberg, Germany

Methods

Prospective study of pseudophakic silicone oil-filled eyes after vitrectomy. No exclusion criteria, three consecutive AL measurements per eye were taken with both devices. Only measurements with a good quality of the respective parameter were included in the analysis. Mean difference and Bland-Altman analysis was used for the assessment of agreement. Repeatability was assessed with the Coefficient of Variation (CV).

Results

The measurements of 29 out of 30 eyes were analyzed. Mean age (±SD) was 64 (±9.5) years. Mean axial length measured with Pentacam AXL was 25.53 (±1.94)mm. Mean axial length using the mode for silicone oil-filled eyes with IOL Master 700 was 24.73 (±1.97)mm. Mean systematic difference was 0.80 (±0.08)mm, p < 0.001. The AL values of the two devices showed a strong linear correlation (r=0.999). 12 eyes were measured for verification, the results showed a good agreement with a statistically and clinically non-significant mean difference of 0.02 (±0.04)mm, p= 0.134.

Conclusions

The axial length of silicone oil-filled eyes can be reliably measured with Pentacam AXL (Wave) using the -0.80mm correction. The offset is being implemented into the Pentacam AXL Software as a new measurement mode for pseudophakic silicone oil-filled eyes. The verification confirmed good agreement between the two devices.
