Purpose
To present 2 severe cases of phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis in young patients, with a good response to anti-inflammatory treatment but with important residual corneal scars
Methods
We present two male patients, 19 and 22 years of age without associated risk factors who attended the ophthalmology consultation presenting a typical picture of phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis in both eyes, with a very good response to anti-inflammatory medication but, presumably due to the delay in attending the consultation and the aggressiveness of the condition, they presented central corneal infiltrates that, despite the aforementioned good response, left corneal scars that compromise the final visual acuity
Results
The final visual acuity on a decimal scale was 0.7 and 0.5 in the first patient, and 1.0 and 0.7 in the second patient with irregular astigmatism in both cases
Conclusions
Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis is a relatively infrequent pathology that usually has a benign evolution, but in some cases, such as in the patients that present it, it can leave significant corneal scars that may even require a corneal transplant to achieve adequate visual acuity
