Purpose

To evaluate the influence of angle alpha on Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) and Higher order aberrations (HOA) in eyes with Trifocal IOL.

Setting

Private Eye Hospital, India

Methods

A prospective study where subjects implanted with trifocal IOL (Acrysof IQ PanOptix, Alcon) aged 40-70 years with BCVA better than 0.2 logMAR were included. Subjects with IOP > 22mmHg, any ocular disease, previous refractive surgery, any intra-operative complications were excluded. At post operative 1 month follow up, angle alpha, Internal HOA  (3rd, 4th and 5th order) and MTF at spatial frequencies of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 cycles per degree (CPD) were measured using Hoya I-Trace aberrometer (Tracey Technologies, Houston, TX). For Statistical purpose the eyes were divided in to two groups based on angle alpha magnitude (Group 1:≤ 0.45 and Group 2: > 0.45) and the mean MTF and internal HOA were compared using two sample t test.

Results

Total 93 eyes with mean±SD age of 58.21±7.97 years were included. The mean±SD magnitude of angle alpha in group 1 (63 eyes) and group 2 (30 eyes) were 0.30±0.08 and 0.56±0.07 respectively. Internal MTF were better with lower angle alpha at all spatial frequencies however it was not statistically significant (P>0.05). The Internal HOA were similar in both groups (P>0.05).

Conclusions

We did not find any significant effect of angle alpha on MTF and HOA however lower angle alpha results in better modulation transfer function.
