Purpose

The purpose of this clinical study was to study the visual and refractive outcomes, rotational stability and defocus curve obtained in cataract patients implanted with the Liberty Toric 677MTY intraocular lens.

Setting

Oftalvist, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain

Methods

15 age-related cataract patients with regular corneal astigmatism between 1 and 6 D were considered to be included in the study. This single-center prospective study was approved by the Ethics Committee and conducted in accordance with the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki. Main outcome measures were binocular visual acuity at different distances (far, intermediate (66 cm) and near (40 cm)), refractive error, rotational stability and defocus curve. Intra- and post-operative complications were also recorded at 1-month post-surgery.

Results

Mean distance corrected visual acuity was -0.02±0.07 logMAR, distance corrected intermediate visual acuity was 0.11±0.09 logMAR and distance corrected near visual acuity was 0.07±0.07 logMAR. The mean spherical equivalent was 0.05±0.47 D (ranging from -1.00 to 1.25 D). 70% and 93.3% of eyes were ±0.50 and ±1.00D of the attempted spherical equivalent, respectively. 73.33% of eyes showed ≤0.50D and 96.67% ≤1.00D of postoperative refractive astigmatism. Double-angle analysis revealed a centroid of 0.10D @ 153º ±0.52D. Mean rotation was 1.35±4.25 degrees. No intra- and post-operative complications were found. Defocus curve revealed a change in visual acuity as a function of vergence being >20/25 for most of vergence values.

Conclusions

The present analysis at 1-month post-implantation of the Liberty Toric 677MTY intraocular lens shows that this lens offers satisfactory visual and refractive outcomes at different distances, good rotational stability without intra- and post-operative adverse events.
