Purpose
To outline the early postoperative outcomes and subjective quality of vision (QoV) following implantation of a new diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL).
Setting
Cathedral Eye Clinic, Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK
Methods
The study enrolled 20 patients implanted bilaterally with the Intensity (Hanita Lenses) multifocal IOL. The refractive target was emmetropia in each eye. Refraction, binocular uncorrected (UDVA), binocular uncorrected intermediate (UIVA) and near (UNVA) visual acuities, defocus curves and QoV questionnaires were evaluated 1 month postoperatively.
Results
The mean monocular UDVA, UIVA and UNVA was 0 ± 0.09 logMAR, 0.09 ± 0.16 logMAR and 0.16 ± 0.09 logMAR. The binocular UDVA and UNVA was -0.06 ± 0.06 and 0.12 ± 0.04 logMAR. High QoV outcomes were reported with high subjective functional vision and overall treatment satisfaction reported. Defocus curve assessment shows smooth transition from distance to near viewing distances.
Conclusions
Bilateral implantation of this new trifocal IOL provides a range of clear vision with excellent distance and intermediate vision. Overall patient satisfaction was high with high spectacle independence. Further analysis with greater numbers and a longer postoperative follow-up will be reported at the conference.
