Purpose
To compare clinical outcomes and contrast sensitivity between patients who underwent bilateral implantation of a new monofocal higher-order aspheric anterior surface (ICB00 IOL) with those with aberration-free aspheric optic (Envista IOL)
Setting
- Department of anterior segment. Ophthalmology Institute, Ioannina, Greece.
Methods
We included sixty eyes from 30 patients undergoing phacoemulsification with bilateral implantation of the ICB00 (30 patients) or Envista (30 patients) IOLs were enrolled. We performed a complete ophthalmological examination and complementary studies of contrast sensitivity
Results
The mean binocular UIVA was better in the ICB00 group (0.10 logMAR) compared to the Envista group (0.30 logMAR) (p < 0.001). The patient satisfaction for near and intermediate vision was significantly higher in the ICB00 group compared to the Envista IOL. However, there was no difference in patient satisfaction for overall and distance visi¢£on between two groups. Contrast sensitivity, increase in all spatial frequencies ROW (CPD) (One Way ANOVA p=0.00).
Conclusions
The Tecnis Eyhance IOL increases depth of focus due to a higher-order aspheric anterior surface with a continuous and localized increase in power from the periphery to the center of the IOL that provides better binocular intermediate vision and higher satisfaction for near and intermediate vision while keeping distance image quality comparable to a standard monofocal IOL
