Purpose
To analyze the association between spherical equivalent (SE) and ocular biometry measures [axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), central corneal thickness (CCT)] with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) parameters [anterior chamber angle (ACA), angle opening distance (AOD), trabecular iris surface area (TISA)] and SD-OCT parameters [disc area, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) analysis] in emmetropes and those with low refractive error.
Setting
Methods
A hospital-based observational study was conducted and 225 subjects between 18-35 years of age were enrolled. All participants (myopic, emmetropic, and hypermetropic) underwent refraction, ocular biometry for axial length, anterior chamber depth, and central corneal thickness. AS-OCT and RNFL and GCC thickness were measured using Cirrus HD-OCT (Carl Zeiss, Dublin, CA, USA). Only patients with BCVA of 20/20 were included and only the right eyes were considered for analysis.
Results
There were 110 myopes, 101 emmetropes and 14 hypermetropes. There was a strong negative correlation between SE with nasal and temporal ACA (r= 0.477, r= 0.438; p<0.001). There was a strong positive correlation between AL with nasal and temporal ACA (r=0.238, r=0.282; p<0.001). There was a strong negative correlation between CCT with nasal and temporal ACA (r=-0.375, r=-0.381; p<0.001). The disc area showed a strong positive correlation with AL (r=-0.439, p<0.001) and ACD (r=0.216, p=0.001) and strong negative correlation with SE (r=-0.432, p<0.001) and CCT (r=0.409, p<0.001). The AL showed strong negative correlation with RNFL thickness and GCC thickness measures.
Conclusions
The AL had a positive correlation and SE had a negative correlation with ACA. The CCT too had a negative correlation with nasal and temporal ACA. This indicates progressively broader angle and thinner CCT with increasing myopia. The disc area too correlated positively with AL, indicating progressively increasing disc size with increasing myopia. However, the RNFL thickness and GCC parameters showed greater thinning with increasing myopia.
