Purpose

To evaluate the corneal dynamic response (CDR) parameters in healthy subjects according to age.

Setting

To evaluate the corneal dynamic response (CDR) parameters in healthy subjects according to age.

Methods

Prospective, comparative, cross-sectional study, including 210 eyes of 210 patients, that attend to Oftalmosalud Instituto de Ojos, lima, Peru that underwent high-speed Scheimpflug imaging analysis (Corvis ST, OCULUS). Slit lamp examination, visual acuity, subjective refraction and CDR parameters were evaluated and compared across different age groups (Group A: 1- 9 years old [yo], B: 9-18 yo, C: 19-27 yo, D:28-36 yo, E:37-42 yo, F: 43-54 yo, G: 55-63 yo). Statistical analysis was performed using R program, Pearson Correlation coefficient were obtained between age and CDR parameters accounting for refractive error, intraocular pressure and central corneal thickness.

Results

Mean Stiffness parameter (SPA1) was 108.15 (DS:14.540), 109.85 (DS:14.54) and 103.44 (DS: 11.52) in the group A, C and D respectively (p= 0.05). Mean CBI was 0.18 (DS: 0.12), 0.08 (DS: 0.09) and 0.102 (DS: 0.087) in the group A, C and D respectively (p = 0.001).  Mean TBI was 0.234 (DS: 0.153), 0.22 (DS: 0.20) in the group. Significant correlation was observed between age and CBI (r=0.68, p= 0.004).

Conclusions

Corneal biomechanical parameters are affected by age. Significant differences were found between age groups for CBI parameters, being lower in younger patients. Normative values in healthy pediatric group is necessary for early detection of keratoconus.
