Purpose

To study the clinical profile of patients with optic atrophy excluding glaucomatous optic atrophy

Setting/Venue

Tertiary care hospital in Himachal Pradesh India

Methods

Patients of both the genders of any age group having Optic Atrophy excluding glaucomatous optic atrophy were included in the study after taking consent on a prescribed performa. Relevant data like past history, visual acuity, colour vision, IOP, automated perimetryfundus photo, RNFL thickness, central macular thickness and other findings were recorded.

Results

A total of 41 subjects were included in this study 22 males and 19 females. Out of 22 males 7 had optic atrophy following traumatic optic neuropathy as males are more involved in dangerous activities.

6 subjects all males had optic atrophy due to unknown cause due to poor availability and high costs of genetic testing.

There were 7 subjects having raised intracranial pressure with idiopathic intracranial hypertension being the most common cause.

A total of 6 subjects had optic atrophy secondary to ICSOLs with a female preponderance.

Conclusions

Non glaucomatous optic atrophy is not an uncommon presentation & it is an important sign that may be associated with serious systemic conditions having a significant bearing on overall morbidity or mortality of the patient.
